Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept health insurance?
I do not accept health insurance. However, I can provide invoices for you to submit to your health insurance carrier for reimbursement.
How do I submit for out-of-network speech-language therapy reimbursement?
If you want to submit for reimbursement, I will provide you with an invoice that you can send to your health insurance carrier, as well as any assessment I have provided and/or a progress note to submit along with the invoice.
What are your assessment fees?
Assessments are individualized for each client and thus, fees vary. Assessments can differ in time, instruments used, and specific skills that need to be assessed. Before an assessment takes place, parents may be asked to complete an intake form about their child including concerns, developmental milestones and school-based information. After the intake has been sent back, the fee will be determined and a scheduled time will be set.
How long do speech-language evaluations last?
Because assessments are individualized for each child, the time required varies. In general, evaluations take about 1.5-3 hours, but for some children it may take 4-5 hours and be broken up into two sessions.
What can I expect after the speech-language assessment?
About one/two weeks after the assessment is completed, you will receive a report with results of the evaluation. The report will go though each section of the evaluation and include strengths, weaknesses, impressions, recommendation and goals. In addition, if I think you should seek additional professional assessments (e.g., Occupational Therapy), I will also include that in the report.
Where do evaluations and therapy take place?
Evaluations generally occur in your home. Individual therapy sessions generally occur in your home or a nearby community center (e.g., public library). Locations may vary depending on the goals. For example, if your child is older and has social-based difficulties, we might meet at your home but then leave to go practice social strategies in the community. Social groups with 3-5 children will likely occur in an office or center-based location.
If another therapist conducted an evaluation, do I repeat the evaluation?
It depends. In some circumstances re-testing will not be necessary, but there are circumstances where I will need to re-evaluate the child. For example, re-evaluation may be necessary if a substantial period of time has passed since the prior evaluation, the needs of the child have changed, or my clinical judgment suggests that we need to assess other areas.
How long is each therapy session and how often do the sessions occur?
In general, therapy occurs one, two or three times a week and lasts for either 30 or 45 minutes. This is decided based on my clinical opinion in conjunction with the family depending on the child's age, areas of need, goals being addressed and attention span of the child.
Does therapy occur in a group or individually?
Most therapy occurs individually, and social groups occur in a small group of 3-5 children.
How long will my child need speech therapy?
Speech-Language Pathologists are asked this question often, but there is no one-size-fits-all answer, as each child is different. I have worked with some children for several years and others for a few months. The trajectory can depend on the nature and severity of the disorder, secondary issues (e.g., health, hearing etc.), amount/type of other services, motivation and parent involvement.
How do consultation services work?
Consultation is individualized and the specific services performed vary based on client needs. Some examples include (1) in-home consultation sessions with children and caregivers to develop creative and fun language-building strategies and activities for use in the household; (2) young adult strategies for effective communication during job interviews or other adult interactions; and (3) executive function and organizational strategies (e.g., for children that are messy, disorganized or have a hard time getting dressed before school). Since consultation is not direct therapy, invoices for reimbursement are not provided.
